Changes since release 21.10

The following lists shortly describe the main differences between release 22.04 and the release 21.10.


  • several minor bugfixes


  • atmosphere-ocean coupling now realized via the PALM Model Coupler (PMC). Coupling setup is given in the &nesting_parameters namelist and not via palmrun options -Y and -y any more.
  • MPI communication for exchange of radiosities in RTM is optimized
  • performance optimization of Bott-Chlond advection scheme
  • nesting parameter nesting_bounds allows for "3d_nested" (default), "cyclic_along_x", "cyclic_along_y", and "vertical_only"
  • nesting parameter nesting_mode only allows "one-way" or "two-way"
  • settings for the Lagrangian particle model in nested runs are only allowed for the root domain (they will be communicated to the childs)
  • DEBUG files are by default only opened in case that debug output has been switched on (can be oversteered by new parameter open_debug_files)
  • merge of PALM internal surface data types (only important for developers)
  • parameter recycling_method_for_thermodynamic_quantities replaced by recycling_mthod, which now allows for "turbulent_fluctuation", "absolute_value", and "absolute_value_thermodynamic"

New features:

  • TenStream 3d radiation model
  • shading effects of buildings on the photolysis scheme
  • ability to perform ensemble runs in case of long surface spinup times
  • nesting allows for childs that extend over the whole root-domain width along x OR y
  • pure vertical nesting allows for non-cyclic BCs and the turbulence recycling method (root domain and childs have the same horizontal size) (feature is still in experimental stage)
  • cloud statics output (bulk cloud model)
  • parameterized emissions from point sources (chemistry model)
  • isorropia, a computationally efficient thermodynamic equilibrium model for multiphase multicomponent inorganic aerosols
  • inclusion of radiation for default surfaces
  • divergence as additional diagnostic output quantity
